Freebies for the frugal: Skiing

My friend Dave lives by the slogan: “If it ain’t free, it ain’t me.” He’s got plenty of company these days, as the economy tanks and more folks are finding it hard to splurge on even the little things, never mind a whole vacation. Given that, I’ll be posting a series of free activities, places to go, sights to see, admissions, etc.

Since despite what the calendar says, it’s still winter in a good part of New England, I’ll start with a few that let you ski  free (and yes, there’s still skiing in them thar hills and dales).

The 10th Mountain Ski Club.Way, way up in the tippy-top of Maine, is the 10th Mountain Ski Club, home to a biathlon training facility, 25 kilometers of groomed trails with 3 km lighted for night skiing. When the snow melts, there’s a 1.5 km loop for roller-skiing and roller-blading, and the trails are open for mountain biking. No matter what the season, it’s free. This is a fabulous area that hosts World Cup Nordic races, and the lodge and other facilities are all top notch.

Alpine skiers and riders get free tickets at Okemo on April 1, no fooling! Well, almost free. In order to get a ticket, you must donate a minimum of three non-perishable food items to Okemo’s April Fool’s Food Drive. Okemo staffers will be collecting the goods and issuing ticket vouchers in two locations, the Clock Tower base and the Jackson Gore base.
