I am a "charter" member of the Ocean Wood Campground campers: discovered the campground in '87 and have camped there yearly ever since. I am part of a group of 12 others that met last night to brainstorm and perhaps create a movement to expose the plight of this precious piece of land. I was wondering if there are any other organized groups doing the same. I don't want to re-invent the wheel and we would be happy to partner and communicate with other like groups. Our pretense is "preservation" (of any type-we're realistic enough to know that keeping it a campground is a far reach). We are located approximately a 2 hr drive from Birch Harbor in MidCoast Maine. Would love to hear from any others out there that have either begun this process or have already started. We camped @ Ocean Wood over Halloween weekend and literally "closed the doors" on it's last day. Pretty emotional stuff but we are now rallying in the attempt to somehow prevent this unique area from seeing the "PRIVATE-NO TRESPASSING" signs going up! Hope to hear from some other Ocean Wood lovers.

I'm a wreck. I've been so distraught about losing this gem. The Brunton family has been on my mind. I awoke at 4 this morning and Ocean Wood and the Bruntons were right there in my thoughts. My last stay was over Labor Day weekend - full moon, PERFECT weather - made the usual chore of packing up to leave even more excruciatingly difficult...knowing it COULD be our last time. My heart refuses to believe it. I simply cannot fathom it. After 17 years of magically wonderful and wonderfully magical trips to this special place, I am desperate to find an angel with deep pockets who can save it for us. There simply MUST be a way! As I pulled out of our site that last day, Mike came along on his bike and I knocked his straw hat off giving him a big hug. I'm going to miss him - a man of true integrity, a loving steward of that piece of property for so many years. I'm remaining hopeful until I see the NO TRESPASSING sign go up.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I've visited all of the above, and I agree, the Boothbays are a lovely region, and there are a few bright spots for food, but I just don't share your overall enthusiasm.

I believe that you have missed most of the fine dining in the Boothbay Region. The 4 month tourist season keeps the places edgy, and the staff vibrant and fun. The town is full of energy and the places continue to compete to see who's cheifs are going the produce some of the best seafood served in the state.
One of my favorites is the restaurant at the Tug Boat Inn. It has been one of the state's better resturants for the last 30 years. Incredible views and service accompany the fine food.
I have several friends that prefer the Boothbay Harbor Inn on the East Side. The food and the views rival anyplace that you might find in the Portland and southern coastal areas.
For an inexpensive meal of exceptionally fresh seafood and a deckside meal, I like the former lobsterman's co-op, now The Lobster Warf, just before you get to Brown Brothers.
It's true that many of the cheifs move around in some of the affilated resturants, like the Bistro and McSeaguls (which is just great), but we get enough new talent coming each summer, that much to your disallusion, keeps Boothbay Harbor a fine dining destination. (You've just got to expand your horizons, in East Boothbay, the dining destination for the past 35 years has been Lobsterman's Resturant. At it's Damarisctta River dockside location, it is a very tough place to be on a hot summer weekend.

Try some of the local favorite's places and you'll get a better feel for what a special place Boothbay Harbor is.

"The Cupboard Cafe" in New Harbor does an excellent rendition of the classic Toll House cookie.
Also, the "Island Market" on Islesboro has a killer version as well, with or without nuts.

Thanks for mentioning the attitude problem, Hilary. That alone can ruin a meal! So glad it didn't ruin this one, which actually sounds quite amazing. Must get to MDI again soon.

We enjoyed our recent stay, but it was always in our minds that this would probably be our last...we've arrived at OW on Labor Day each of the last 6 years. So heartbreaking to lose such a precious place and we feel so badly for Mike, Pat and their family. Our hearts truly do go out to the Bruntons. We're hoping that someone will step in and save this
beautiful place.
